I chose "Midlands" for the company as, well that's where a lot of our early clients and their sites were likely to be. How quickly this changed with the first trip down to Crawley in December 2019 just a few weeks after launching. Returning to this site to review the completed works gave me the opportunity to reflect on - and look into - the actual geographic area covered off in the last almost four years. Having had a tinker with GoogleMaps I managed to come up with this - an interactive version of which is available on the Our Services page of the site. As you can see - we've covered a fair bit of the country across the time, revisiting several sites for multiple stages of the audit process on the way to delivering towards 200 audits, assessments and reviews in 2023. What does this mean for the future - well we're certainly not changing the name, but it does mean that if you have a project and you're not sure if we can help, there's a good chance we can so don't be afraid to pick up the phone or drop over an email. And, if it's just that bit too far, we'll use the network of extensive Road Safety contacts to recommend a trusted colleague who may be just around the corner.

With feelings of elation, a small slice of disbelief and a large portion of relief, I’m immensely proud to announce that Midlands Road Safety is 1 today! There have been so many moments that required a good deal of reflection in 2020 and this time of year always provides them personally, but after 12 months of running a small independent consultancy, I wanted to take a moment to consider just what the last year has meant for Midlands Road Safety and myself. When starting a business there are a wealth of information sources that’ll advise you on some of the more commonly occurring pitfalls to avoid, especially in those first, testing 12 months. That initial trepidation – is this the right thing, the right time, the right service to how well do I really know the industry, how many contacts do I have and is there genuinely enough work out there to sustain a new start-up? Then, as things are starting to get established someone throws ‘global pandemic’ in to the mix – that wasn’t in any of the books! It turns out that what I already thought was true all along – the Road Safety and wider highway and development engineering industry really is a strong community. I’ve been able to draw on the expertise of so many in the industry – former colleagues, clients as well as friends, family and other small business owners in the last 12 months who have been more than willing to share their experiences and ‘top tips’. Their advice has really helped develop and refine the MRS offering as well as kept me personally grounded and focused. Over the last year MRS has delivered work for over 20 clients at sites across 30 plus counties in the UK, as well as providing road safety support for a local authority. I’m thankful to each and every one of our clients for providing opportunities to the ‘new kid on the block’. I’m also incredibly grateful to the small team of colleagues who’ve helped to deliver all of the work! Their professionalism and expertise have allowed the business to be flexible and extremely responsive to the needs of our clients and once the current ‘Covidian’ restrictions are a distant memory I’m looking forward to the chance to celebrate this anniversary with them properly. In the next 12 months I’m really looking forward to seeing how the changing face of transportation continues to develop. At the start of the year there was much excitement as large infrastructure projects featured so heavily in the early budget. Whilst many are progressing, it’s been great to see the spotlight turn to sustainable transport schemes with ‘pop-up’ cycling and walking facilities and the release of LTN1/20 providing a much-needed update to how we provide a robust, connected cycling network. More recently it has also been good to see the CIHT SoRSA Road Safety Audit Guidelines 2020 published, helping to clarify the Road Safety Audit processes for those involved in delivering and commissioning audits. Of course, I am also hopeful that we can build on Year 1 from a business perspective as well and I'm excited to do so. Road Safety is a passion – it’s an industry that perhaps doesn’t get the attention that it deserves in the national psyche and, given the chaos of 2020, it's understandable this year. But moving forwards I hope that MRS can play a part in promoting and delivering a safer road network and better, more cohesively designed and delivered schemes as a result of the input that we can have on the projects we're involved with. I will end on one more thank you – to everyone who’s supported the business in whatever way. I am more grateful than I can truly express.

In November 2019, the bullet was bitten and all the months of planning time had seemingly vanished in an instant. It was Day 1 of Midlands Road Safety and I wasn't sure how things were going to start. There'd been no expensive marketing drive and no fanfare to announce the arrival of a small, new, idealistic Road Safety focused consultancy in to the marketplace. Midlands Road Safety was set up as an opportunity to focus on the work that I have a real passion for and to create the opportunity to offer a wider approach. The goal was always to work alongside some fantastic professionals from a number of former 'lives' within the industry and to help to promote the integration of Road Safety within engineering design. Despite my early trepidation, what became apparent in those first few weeks is that whilst this field is undoubtedly a competitive one, it's also a family. There's been a huge amount of support from colleagues past and present, clients new and old and even some would be competitors that has enabled the first six months of Midlands Road Safety to be successful. Perhaps some of the biggest and most welcome positives in these first six months have arisen from some of the most challenging and testing times since the 2008 financial crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the industry and the world to it's core, and is an ongoing tragedy that will undoubtedly take some while to recover from. In these testing times the engineering world has come together and, as it always does, it has 'found a way'. We've found new ways to work, to communicate be that client, supplier, highway authorities, planners, governing bodies you name it, and we have refused to let the current catastrophe grind everything to a halt. Social distancing has been woven in to every day life from how we attend site and work together to using new IT packages to share information and to stay in touch. But better than just finding a way, there's a great amount of sharing experiences, best practice, and an even stronger willingness to deliver solutions to previously unthinkable barriers that is pushing the industry from not just survival mode but progressing forwards. Problem solving is what got me in to Road Safety in the first place. It has inspired, tested, guided, ultimately led to the establishment of Midlands Road Safety Ltd six months ago. It's a skill that's been at the forefront these last few months and it is what will drive the company forward for, hopefully, many more months to come. Before signing off on this first post, I'd like to say a huge thank you. Thank you to those clients and colleagues who have taken a chance and supported Midlands Road Safety in these first, fledgling months. Without you, especially in these last two months, the company simply wouldn't exist.
